TROPICALIA: An avant-garde artistic style from the late 1960's in Brazil that was characterized by traditional Brazilian culture, foreign rock influences and political activism.
This piece was created by hand-forging copper into curved fronds inspired by the part of a banana tree where the leaves shoot outward from the trunk. Each piece has a careful sifting of colors that were fired in a kiln. It attached to the body with dyed black cotton strings meant to tie and cascade down the back.
This radiant neck piece is the central design in a series of body adornment inspired by the Amazon rain forest in Brazil. The banana tree represents prosperity of family.
